What's the job?

About the role

As a DevEx Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in optimizing the entire Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) by creating an efficient, self-service, and seamless experience for developers. You will drive automation, standardize workflows, and utilize a data-proven approach to identify and eliminate friction in the SDLC. You will build foundational internal tools (IDP) that empower product teams to deliver value faster, ensuring every improvement is measurable and evidence based.

  • Collaborate with Senior and Lead Engineers to help shape and deliver the roadmap for the Internal Developer Platform (IDP).
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the Internal Developer Platform, primarily using Backstage.io, supporting the consolidation of tools and a consistent developer self-service experience.
  • Assist in evaluating new technologies and tools, with a focus on reducing developer cognitive load and improving usability.
  • Contribute to the implementation and improvement of CI/CD workflows in GitLab, following established best practices and “Golden Paths” to ensure security and compliance.
  • Develop internal CLI tools and API integrations using Python and TypeScript/JavaScript to support automation and tool integration.
  • Help collect and analyse developer experience metrics (e.g. surveys, system data) to identify bottlenecks and suggest improvements.
  • Support initiatives aimed at improving the DX Core 4 areas, ensuring changes deliver clear value to engineers.
  • Promote Platform Engineering practices by participating in workshops, demos, and feedback sessions with internal users.
  • Collaborate closely with product, security, and cloud teams to define technical standards, governance models, and best practices for DevOps, cloud operations, and security compliance
  • Support knowledge sharing within the team and contribute to a culture focused on empathy towards the developer as the end user.

What you'll bring

  • Professional experience in DevOps or Platform Engineering, with hands-on involvement in building or supporting internal tools for developers.
  • Practical experience with Backstage.io, including configuring the platform, working with existing plugins, and contributing to customizations using TypeScript/JavaScript.
  • Good working knowledge of GitLab CI/CD and GitOps principles, with experience maintaining and improving pipelines.
  • Production experience in at least one of the following: TypeScript/JavaScript or Python; familiarity with Bash scripting.
  • Experience working with cloud-native technologies, including containers (Docker) and Kubernetes, with exposure to Helm and basic cluster administration.
  • Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools (e.g. Datadog), including using dashboards and alerts to support platform and application health.
  • Working knowledge of AWS and Infrastructure as Code concepts; experience using Terraform to provision or modify infrastructure.
  • Understanding of microservices and distributed systems concepts in a production environment.
  • Ability to identify common developer pain points and translate them into actionable technical tasks or improvements.
  • Awareness of developer productivity metrics (e.g. DX Core 4, DORA) and interest in applying them to improve developer experience.
  • Ability to shift focus from "managing infrastructure" to "serving developers," understanding that the platform's success is measured by user adoption and satisfaction.
  • Nice to have: experience contributing to improvements in developer efficiency, delivery speed, or developer satisfaction in previous roles.
  • Excellent command of English (written and spoken)
